PhD Course: Sensors for sustainable production
The Sentio PhD course "Sensors for Sustainable Production" started in August 2025 and will run until March 2026. The aim is to equip our PhD students with a comprehensive understanding of sensor technologies and their integration into sustainable manufacturing systems.
The course focuses on sensor applications, signal types, limitations, and material selection, as well as life cycle perspectives. Students will gain insights into both the scientific foundations and the practical implementation of sensor solutions that drive sustainability and innovation in manufacturing.
Throughout the course, the PhD students will visit several Sentio partner companies — including Alfa Laval, Tetra Pak, Sandvik Coromant, and others — to explore how sensors are applied in real-world industrial contexts. They will also take part in guest lectures delivered by leading experts from a wide range of research fields, spanning from quantum computing to metal machining.
The program combines teamwork, lectures, literature reviews, and study visits, providing a rich and varied learning experience (and, as our students say, probably quite a few cups of coffee).
Each participant will conduct a detailed literature review and investigate state-of-the-art sensor technologies relevant to their area of research. Their findings will be compiled into a comprehensive report, which will be presented at Sentio Days 2026 (12–13 March).
