Helmi Attia - Short Biography
Helmi Attia is a Principal Research Officer and former Manager of Advanced Material Removal Processes, at the Aerospace Manufacturing Technology Centre (AMTC) of the National Research Council Canada (NRC). When he joined the NRC in 2002, he was mandated to establish and manage the Advanced Material Removal Technology R&TD Program and Laboratory. Before joining the NRC, he was a Principal Research Engineer at Ontario Hydro Research Division (1980-2002), responsible of establishing and managing the Tribology-Fretting Wear/Fatigue Research Program and Laboratory, to support the operation of the CANDU Nuclear Reactor. Earlier, he was the Manager of Fabrication Technology at Spar Aerospace Technology Ltd. (1979-80), contributing to the manufacturing of the Canadian Satellite Subsystems.
Throughout his professional career, Helmi maintained formal Adjunct Professorship appointments with a number of Universities to pursue advanced fundamental and applied research, and to share the knowledge he acquired over the years through teaching and research supervision. Currently, he is an Adjunct Professor of Mechanical Engineering at McGill University (2002-to date) and an Adjunct Professor, Dept. Industrial and Materials Science, Chalmers University of Technology, Göteborg, Sweden (2020-to date).
His research interest includes advanced manufacturing (material removal and additive subtractive processes, tool condition monitoring, hybrid machining; laser and vibration assisted machining), tribology (cutting tools, fretting wear/fatigue), heat transfer and CFD modelling of machining systems, and thermal deformation of machine tool structures. To his credit, Helmi has authored/coauthored some 300 papers in archival journals and refereed conference proceedings, 5 book chapters and more than 125 technical research reports. He was also the principal/co-editor of 8 books and bound volumes.
